Trinidad and Tobago Energy Conference - Energy and Entrepreneurship

February 7-9th 2010 at the Hyatt Regency Trinidad

Eco-tours/bird-watching

Despite being a well developed oil and gas province, Trinidad & Tobago has many areas of outstanding natural beauty and nature reserves. Our tropical environment means that many areas are heavily forested, especially along the Northern Range and in the east of the country.

Trinidad is considered a very good destination for bird-watching, with both South American species from the mainland and some endemic species as well. Bird-watching excursions include the Caroni Swamp, just outside Port of Spain, where you can see Scarlet Ibis, and the world famous Asa Wright Nature Centre.

The conference organizers are working with the Trinidad & Tobago Incoming Tour Operators Association to ensure that our delegates are able to experience all that Trinidad & Tobago has to offer. Three eco-tours are available:

Asa Wright Nature Centre (9:00 am. – 3:00 pm)

Our mini-bus winds through Trinidad’s Northern Range, an extension of the South American Andes, on its way to the (203) acre Asa Wright Nature Centre. The preserve is nestled in a Rain Forest and has an abundance of birds, butterflies, insects and plants. Your naturalist guide will interpret the rich variety of plant and animal life protected within the centre’s grounds as you explore the Discovery Trail. Colorful birds, like the brilliant green shining Honeycreepers and the Jacob hummingbirds visit the nearby feeders just below the verandah. This is one of the best places for birding in the tropics. After you will partake of a delicious local lunch before embarking on your return journey.

Includes: A/C transport, guide, entrance fees
Special instructions: Walking shoes, sun blocks and insect repellent.

Caroni Swamp Bird Sanctuary (2:00 pm. – 7:00 pm)

This tour involves an exciting visit to the Caroni Swamp Bird Sanctuary, a Ramsar Site and one of the most beautiful mangrove wetlands in the Western Hemisphere, with diverse wildlife. Upon arrival at the Swamp there will be a guided tour of the Visitor Centre. We then board a flat-bottomed boat to experience the thrill of journeying through a maze of mangrove lined waterways and lagoons. One may view fiddler crabs on the mudflats, the occasional spectacle caiman on the embankment, the silky anteater in the mangrove and a variety of the many species of birds that inhabit the swamp. As the sun sets, thousands of birds return from feeding grounds to roost for the night, in particular the Scarlet Ibis. Visitors are mesmerized by the transformation of mangrove trees into living Christmas trees – a sight to behold!

Includes: A/C transport, guide, entrance fees
Special instructions: Long pants, insect repellant.

Chaguaramas Peninsula – Gasparee Caves (9:00 am. – 1:00 pm).

cave

Chaguaramas is a protected area rich in its natural environment and home to several offshore islands.

After a guided tour through the Chaguaramas National Park you will board a boat for a fifteen (15) minute ride through the north-western archipelago. On arrival at Pt. Baleine, a former whaling station, the tour guide will take you to the cave lodge and the magnificent limestone cave system of the “Big Cave”.

Many years of rainfall may have combined with carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to form a weak carbonic acid, which slowly dissolved the limestone rocks of Gasparee. This resulted in the formation of a series of underground passages and caves that today form the Gasparee caves.

As you descend into the shimmering blue water of the underground pool; the Blue Grotto of the Big Cave, which reflects the images of the awesome stalactites and stalagmites, you will experience the sighting of the features such as dinosaur head, chandelier, lovers in embrace, cave flowers, cauliflower; it is all up to your imagination and interpretation. From there we travel by boat across to Scotland Bay or Monos Island for a sea-bath and a picnic lunch.

Includes: A/C transport, Boat ride, guide, entrance fees
Special Instructions: Comfortable shoes / sneakers, insect repellant, bathing suit, towel.
Intensity: Moderate

Further information on costs and booking these tours will be made available in near future.

The Energy Chamber
The Energy Chamber

The Energy Chamber is the representative organization for the Trinidad & Tobago energy and related sectors. We are based in the City of San Fernando, a member of the World Energy City Partnership and the traditional hub of the energy and heavy industrial sectors. Membership of the Chamber is, however, drawn from across the country and beyond. Founded in 1956, the Chamber is an independent a-political organization governed by a Council elected annually from amongst the membership. The Chamber has a strong tradition of vigorously and effectively representing our members' interests and for significantly contributing to national development.

The Trinidad & Tobago Energy Conference (formerly the Trinidad & Tobago Petroleum Conference), since 1989, is organised by the Energy Chamber, the representative association for the Trinidad & Tobago energy sector (www.energy.tt). It is a well respected and well established energy conference and widely regarded as the premier energy sector event in the Caribbean region. The vision of the Chamber is to steer the energy sector of Trinidad & Tobago and the wider Caribbean from mere hydrocarbon extraction to sustainable development.

The annual conference attracts members and non-members from around the region and is a prestigious event on the international conference circuit. The Energy Conference continues to grow in scope and importance and for the past two years has incorporated both a Workshop and Tradeshow element.
